Quick Facts Bibi Farber is a native New York singer/ songwriter and guitarist with two independently released CDs, "Firepop" and "Second Kiss". To date, her songs have been used in over 250 instances in a wide variety of TV shows, as well as DVDs : among others Season Two of Scrubs, Season Two "Popular" (Disney) and commercials; including a national spot for Kodak. Much of Bibi’s music is upbeat, driving and rich in hooks and melodies. As she recently told WIRED Magazine, she aspires toward "concise melodic content" in the pop/rock tradition. . Her influences range from 60’s and 70 ’s pop to harder edged indie rock. Front woman, side woman, backing singer, rhythm guitarist, sometimes keyboardist and even bassist: the number of bands Bibi has participated in would number in the dozens. She’s made great use of local talent in New York for performing and recording her own songs, having collaborated with members of Television, The Smithereens, Nada Surf, Space Hog, Spin Doctors and various obscure members of garage rock royalty. Her second CD, "Second Kiss" was produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Son Volt, Dinosaur Jr., Dar Williams, Breeders, Bob Dylan, and thousands more at www.johnagnello.com ) Bibi played all the guitar herself on this elegant and whimsical collection of pop. It also makes great use of keyboards, organ, mellotron and piano, played by Andy Burton (Ian Hunter Band) supported by a muscular Who–influenced rhythm section. Bibi has performed for the last few years as a solo artist, locally, regionally, and on tour opening up shows for Pat Dinizio of The Smithereens. Performing Songwriter Magazine (spring 2007) features Bibi on the subject of licensing opportunities for independent songwriters as a lucrative revenue stream, as did a feature interview in the 2005 edition of the book "Songwriters Market". Her first CD "Firepop" comes with an interesting story. Although she was born in Manhattan, Bibi spent her high school years in Orebro, Sweden, where she fell in with a particular pocket of the local music scene that was patently obsessed with New York’s post punk scene, CBGB’s, and specifically Television. When she returned to NYC at 19 she attended every Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd show in site. 14 years later, she approached Richard Lloyd about producing a 3- song demo. Why stop there? The recordings swelled to 11 songs, Lloyd contributed his trademark blistering guitar, and before you knew it, Bibi had turned this demo into her first independent release, "Firepop". Then Bibi, Richard Lloyd and bassist Peter Stuart played the Firepop material at festival and club dates in Sweden in ’97, and upon returning: Voila! The new Richard Lloyd Band was forged, with Bibi on guitar and Peter on bass. They later connected with Chris Butler (Waitresses) on drums. They played glorious noise all over the place for the next four years. She is currently recording about 30 new songs, and hopes they will resonate with live crowds and TV audiences all over the world! EDUCATION: BS Music Technology at NYU. Two semesters Harmony & Analysis at Julliard. AWARDS: Bibi won the Dusty Springfield Look Alike contest at the Losers Lounge tribute to the singer, and walked away with the 3- CD box set including many rarities from Dusty’s career. VOLUNTEER WORK: Bibi has played regularly for the last 7 years in hospitals through the organization Musicians on Call www.musiciansoncall.org AFFILIATIONS: Bibi is a member of the Swedish Church Choir in New York City and has contributed original gospel flavored pop with four part harmonies for their performances. All are welcome but the services are entirely in Swedish! www.swedishchurch.net Personal Background Bibi is my real name. It’s a nickname in Sweden, where my mother was from. My father Barry Faber is Jewish and from the South. He’s a famous radio talk show host. I have a sister, Celia Farber who is a journalist. I'm from Manhattan originally, but was transplanted to this town called Orebro, Sweden for my teenage years. During the post punk era, I played bass in an eclectic Swedish New Wave band, which was ironically influenced by all the classic New York bands. When I came back to the city, I fronted and wrote songs for two driving pop rock outfits - The Indigos, later Bibi and the Blacksheep. I was rhythm guitarist in a couple of raunchy New York bands too, such as Children of The Night and The Ventilators (now The Shakes). The early '90's were spent gigging as a solo acoustic act and playing 70's covers around New York with Joe McGinty, former keyboardist in The Psychedelic Furs. In 1995 I set out to create GLOW- an elegant heavy pop combo. I played with many talented people, including Mark White from The Spin Doctors and Dennis Diken from The Smithereens. Peter Stuart, longtime friend and fellow Who fanatic played bass. I recorded several demos and eventually recorded my debut Firepop which you can read more about and of course listen to and order from this site. ![]() My room at age 14. A staunch democrat at the time, notice the little picture of Jimmy Carter in the left hand corner below Roger Daltrey... Influences?: Well, I’ve been working with one of them, guitarist Richard Lloyd (Television, Matthew Sweet). It was a big thrill that he not only agreed to produce us but also played on my songs. I'm a old Television head from way back - my friends and first band in Sweden always acknowledged Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine as THE standard by which creative guitar playing was measured. That was many years ago and I still wholeheartedly agree. I'm a big fan of his solo records in particular. "Field Of Fire" (Mistlur Records, 1985) was recorded in Sweden with members of my first band... I have also in my lifetime truly deeply dug and keep digging: The Who, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Spacehog,, Matthew Sweet, Dusty Springfield, great garage rock, Tori Amos, The Psychedelic Furs, The Smithereens, Iggy Pop, Peter Gabriel, Patti Smith, The Animals, Magazine, Elvis Presley, Carole King, The Zombies, Chuck Berry, Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin, Slim Harpo, Burt Bacharach, Elastica, The Partridge Family, New York Dolls, Elton John, Howlin' Wolf …it’s a vast and glorious rock & roll landscape and I keep finding more! Performance: I have performed my music at the following establishments to name a few: CBGB's, CB's Gallery, Brownies, The Mercury Lounge, Continental, Luna Lounge, Tramps, The Bottom Line, Bowery Ballroom, Manitobas, The Living Room, Sidewalk Cafe, The Bitter End, Eddies Attic and the Red Light Cafe in Atlanta, Blue Man Group (featured lounge performer) in Boston, regular Losers Lounge appearances at Fez, The Nightingale Bar, Under Acme, Sin-e, South Street Seaport, Central Park and the New York City Subway System and more. In Europe I’ve played festivals and club dates in Sweden and in London at The Borderline with Spear of Destiny. I recently opened shows on Pat DiNizio’s (Smithereens) solo tour and currently play around New York City solo and on guitar with Richard Lloyd. The Songs: Melodies are flying about everywhere! You just have to get their attention and finish them, dress them up as songs. Shine and Unlocked are modern day love songs, Swallow a Dream is about a future society where happiness is mandatory, not optional. Caroline's Waiting is about a teenager and her deadbeat musician father. That Girl Again is about someone slipping into schizophrenia. Disconnected is about getting goddamed disconnected.
